Agendas 21. A selection of experiences on urban Agendas 21

The commitment of French local authorities to the territorial Agenda 21 approach grew as the result of two events in the years between 2000 and 2010: the Earth Summit in Johannesburg in 2002 and the municipal elections of 2008, which were held at the same time as the Grenelle Environment Forum.

Departments and regions play an important role in sustainable development dynamics: many provide methodological and financial support to municipalities and agglomerations to help them implement sustainable development. France now has over 550 local Agenda 21 plans. This dossier identifies urban Agenda 21 plans established by the end of the 2000s and provides a brief presentation, contact information and Internet links to find out more about each of the approaches.
